Nakai Organic Tea Garden
Tucked away in the misty hills of Wazuka, a region known as the heart of Japanese tea cultivation for over 800 years, Nakai is a family-run tea farm with over 350 years of tradition. But what makes them truly special isn’t just their history, it’s their commitment to the future.
In 1986, after years of conventional farming, the pesticides and chemicals used at work were affecting Mr. Nakai's health. He made a bold decision: to stop using pesticides, long before “organic” was a thing in Japan.
The first few years were tough: crop losses, criticism, and having to start from zero. But he stayed true to his vision: tea that’s safe, clean, and kind to the earth.
Today, almost 40 years later, his son Toshitaka carries on the mission. Nakai was the first tea farm in Japan certified organic under JAS organic, and their teas now meet both USDA and EU organic standards.
We’re proud to source our matcha from Nakai, a producer who puts health, taste, and the environment first.
